The Luton Renewable Energy Hub is centred on an 850 MW grid connection at Hockliffe, close to the M1, London Luton Airport and the Midland Main Line. The project has the potential to bring together renewable generation, long-duration energy storage, digital infrastructure and local energy demand within one coordinated infrastructure model.
The hub could support a range of local energy needs, including an AI data centre campus, heat reuse for homes, businesses and community facilities, and HGV charging along the M1 corridor. By pairing digital infrastructure with renewable generation and storage, the project could help create a cleaner and more resilient model for high-performance computing.
With demand for clean power, logistics electrification and digital infrastructure continuing to grow across Luton and the South Midlands, the project provides a practical model for how renewable energy infrastructure can support jobs, skills, local partnerships and long-term economic growth.
